Cost: $37/student Skill Level:Should have some spinning background. Description:
Navajo spindle will be provided to use in class and can be purchased for $30. Roving is included and will be provided at class time.
The Navajo hand spindle was used by Navajo and Pueblo Indian nations for hand-spinning wool. Characterized by its large size, which necessitates rolling the shaft on the thigh to make it spin, the Navajo spindle is an example of a supported spindle. It has a long shaft and a heavy whorl, which makes it too heavy to be spun while being suspended in the air. The spindle has a shaft about 30-33" long for use while sitting on the floor or from a chair. The whorl is near the bottom of the shaft.
The one-handed long draw technique is the only way that yarn can be spun on the Navajo spindle. Therefore, the fiber must be carefully prepared so that the drafting will flow smoothly. It makes sense to spin clockwise; for the Navajo the Z-twist is the norm. Class size — 6
